10 Tips to Avoid Lung Disease

Lung disease is any condition that prevents the lungs from functioning properly. There are three main kinds of lung disease:

Airway Diseases:

These diseases affect the airways that carry oxygen and gases in and out of the lungs. They usually cause blocking or narrowing of the airways. These include asthma, COPD and bronchiectasis.

Lung Tissue Diseases:

These diseases affect the structure of the lung tissue. Scarring or inflammation of the tissue restricts the lungs from expanding fully making it harder for them to take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide. Pulmonary fibrosis and sarcoidosis are examples of lung tissue disease.

Lung Circulation Diseases:

These diseases affect the blood vessels in the lungs. They are caused by the clotting of blood or scarring and inflammation of blood vessels. They also reduce the ability of the lungs to take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide. These diseases may also affect the heart function. Pulmonary hypertension is an example of lung circulation disease.

Many lung diseases involve a combination of these three types. They are acute or chronic and can be fatal. The most common lung diseases include:

  • Asthma
  • Pneumothorax or atelectasis – Collapse of part or all of the lung
  • Bronchitis – Swelling or inflammation in the main passages (bronchial tubes) that carry air to the lungs
  • COPD – Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Lung cancer
  • Pneumonia – Lung infection
  • Pulmonary edema – Abnormal buildup of fluid in the lungs
  • Pulmonary embolus – Blocked lung artery

Here are 10 tips to avoid the lung disease

Quit Smoking

Cigarette smoking is the major cause of lung cancer and COPD, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Cigarette smoke narrows air passages making it difficult to breathe. Over time, it destroys the lung tissue and trigger changes that grow into cancer

Keep Away from Pollutants

Secondhand smoke, air pollution, chemicals at home and workplace and radon can all cause or worsen lung disease. Vacuum clean your home and car.

Prevent Infection

Cold or a respiratory infection can sometimes become serious. You can do several things to protect yourself such as washing hands often with soap, avoiding crowds during the cold and flu season, maintain good oral hygiene, and quarantine yourself when you’re sick.

Get Regular Health Checkups

Schedule visits to your doctor even if you’re well. Many times, lung diseases go undetected until they are serious. During the checkup, your breathing will reveal any anomalies.

Aerobic exercise improves lung capacity.

Drink lot of water

Drinking plenty of water is part of good bronchiole hygiene which can reduce the risk of infection. Bronchioles are small airways deep in the lungs.

Eat lung right

There is evidence that antioxidant foods are good for your lungs. People who ate cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage) had almost half the risk of lung cancer compared to those who don’t eat them regularly.

Get Vaccinated

Get a flu shot in time for the flu season. If you’re 65 or older get the pneumococcal too.

Know the warning signs

Coughing, wheezing or breathing problems that persist for more than a month demands immediate medical attention.

Keep Air Purifying Plants at home

Spider plants, money plants, bamboo palms, aloe vera, English ivy and Boston ferns are natural air purifiers of indoor pollutants and toxins.
