If you look up the term ‘heart attack’, you’ll get a very medical description and medical synonyms too. However, for the common man, the most evident synonym for a heart attack is fear. Considering how easily we swap the terms, it’s understandable how closely we associate the two words together.
The word heart attack is enough to send shivers down our spine, because we believe that it’s life-threatening, which it is, actually. In the list of the two most-feared diseases, ‘heart attack’ and cancer would occupy the first two spots.
However, what most people often do not understand is that how is a heart attack happens and since they do not know this, they are just petrified with the term as a whole. It is very important for people to know what causes a Coronary Heart disease which, in turn, results in a heart attack.
Coronary Heart Disease is a condition where the arteries of a person which are originally smooth and elastic, develop plaque in the inner walls due to various reasons. This, in turn, results in the inner walls becoming narrow and comparatively rigid. Due to the increased rigidness and being narrow, the blood and oxygen supply is restricted to a great level. The plaque may rupture and lead to a heart attack or cardiac arrest.
How does Coronary Artery Disease Develop?
There is no age for this particular disease. Plaque can develop inside the arteries from a young age. As time goes by, the formation and quantity of plaque starts increasing and is joined by other factors such as inflammatory cells, calcium and so on which in turn increases the size of the plaque resulting in the inflammation of the arteries on the outside.
Even some amount of plaque in the vessels block oxygen and blood flow to the heart, now once the size of the block increase, eventually it erode and it forms a blood clot. This blood clot, in turn, blocks the flow of blood to the heart and causes a heart attack.
In some cases, the vessels often lead to the brain instead of the heart, so the reduced supply of blood and oxygen to the brain or a rupture of a vessel in the brain causes a factor what we commonly call a stroke.
The Symptoms of Coronary Artery Disease
Symptoms of this particular disease often start showing up at an early age or even later as time passes by. Hence it is always better to know the symptoms which may help in early detection of this disease. The most common symptom of Coronary Artery Disease chest pain, which in medical terms is known as angina. The symptoms which result in chest pain are:
The pain of angina is usually felt for the chest but people may also feel it in the left shoulder, arms, neck, back and as well as the jaw. Other symptoms for this disease which are seen along with angina are:
- Shortness of breath
- Faster Heartbeats
- Weakness or Dizziness
All of these are in some way related to the formation of coronary artery disease. So, now that the symptoms are known, it is more helpful for the person who is experiencing these symptoms to get checked by a reputed cardiologist or a hospital known for its cardiology department.
The earlier the symptoms are detected, the better it is for the understanding of the condition of the person which in turn helps with the treatment.
