Gastroenterology – Myths and Facts
Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night when you might be in REM sleep just because you feel the need to pass stool?
I am sure most of you have. The feeling isn’t nice after to have a loose motion after a very appetizing meal of good, yet spicy food.
Do you know one of the most common diseases affecting digestion and all the organs involved in it?
Gastroenteritis. It is a fairly common word which is heard around. People often say “Do not eat spicy food or outside food every day, it may cause ‘gastric’ problems”. The infections which directly affects the intestines in your body is due to many factors and not only with regard to food.
An infection like Gastroenteritis is painful. REALLY PAINFUL. The symptoms such as stomach cramps, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting should not be ignored. But have you ever thought that what other diseases could have similar symptoms?
Some of the myths and facts surrounding Gastroenteritis are:
MYTH – Every episode of Chest pain, may not result in a heart attack
FACT – Chest pains are a classic symptom of Gastroenteritis, and it may not always be a heart attack. It is always safe to get checked by a reputed Gastroenterologist.
MYTH – Heartburns are always a result of spicy food.
FACT – Do you know what else also very often causes heartburns? ULCERS. Ulcers in the stomach or oesophagus are sores which are caused by an infection.
MYTH – Blood in your stool always means a tear in your track.
FACT – Blood in your stool might indicate that you might have a condition called GERD. GERD or Gastroesophageal Reflux disease is a condition where the acids in the stomach irritate the lining of food pipe.
MYTH – Smoking helps in Digestion.
FACT – This myth is partially true but also false to some extent. Smoking does not help in digestion. It helps in the movement of the stool. Smoking causes a lot of harm in the process of digestion causing heart burns, peptic ulcers, liver diseases and also gallbladder stones.
MYTH – A period of Starving can resolve Diarrhoea.
FACT – Enforcing starvation or going through a period of not eating will never help with gastroenteritis contrary to popular belief. Fluids should be consumed at regular intervals and also some foods with calories.
MYTH – It (the symptoms) will go away in 24 hours.
FACT – The time period of Viral Gastroenteritis is still unknown. It can be 24 hours, but usually, in most cases, it can go up to several days. Getting checked up by a gastroenterologist is essential.
MYTH – “It might be Food Poisoning”.
FACT – Most of the times, when the symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting are involved, it usually indicates, viral gastroenterocolitis. Consulting a doctor to be sure is THE best option.
MYTH – “It can just be PMS”
FACT – Although it could be PMS, it can also not be. Symptoms like, constant mood changes, cranky behaviour and vomiting are similar to PMS and Gastroenterocolitis. So taking your child to the doctor is the best way to know.
MYTH – Fatty and Unhealthy food cause Gastroenteritis.
FACT – Even though, fatty foods do not help in digestion and may result in acute diarrhoea, food with fats might also help in easing it. Fatty foods digest slower hence can ease the process.
MYTH – Fibrous Food can help in Gastroenterocolitis.
Fact – Fiber comes into two types. Insoluble fibre such as skins of raw vegetable and fruits does not help in diarrhoea. Fibre from beans, peas etc help in curtailing the disease.
