Our heart is the quintessential parts of our lives. We live through it, we love through it and ultimately our body survives with it.
Just as essential the heart is, it is also very delicate as well. It serves as the Brigadier of the body while the brain is the General.
Most of us know what the main function of our heart is. To pump blood to all parts of the body so that the body can get enough oxygen and blood to function every day.
But what happens when a child’s heart is unable to do so when he or she is born?
How do they survive then?
They do survive one day at a time where doctors and the child fight for their survival every single day.
There are several conditions of the heart where it results in improper functioning. These conditions such as blood clots, diseased or damaged vessels or even structural problems often occur at birth as well which are then classified as Congenital Heart disease.
There are also many other types and conditions of the heart which affects a child internally and in most cases, it is really serious but in most cases, the conditions of the heart which affects babies is congenital in nature.
The child’s heart, in this case, has structural problems which arise from the abnormal or incomplete formation of the heart of major blood vessels.
A congenital heart disease is diagnosed in the ultrasound of the 20th week during pregnancy and also can also be diagnosed after the baby is born. Nowadays, due to advancements in technology, it is possible to overcome different types of heart diseases which affect a baby.
Symptoms of heart diseases in babies:
It is often difficult to check for symptoms of heart diseases before the baby is born. During pregnancy, if the doctor, during an ultrasound, detects an abnormal heartbeat, they perform a number of tests to confirm the reason for it.
Once the baby is born, the symptoms which are usually seen are:
- Bluish lips, skin, toes and fingers
- Feeding Difficulties
- Low Birth Weight
- Chest Pain
- Delayed Growth
- Breathlessness or breathing difficulty
In many cases, the symptoms of heart disease may be seen a few years after birth. In that case, the symptoms which are seen are:
- Abnormal Heart Rhythms
- Trouble breathing
Even though before, it used to be difficult saving a baby who had been diagnosed with a major heart defect, even though there have been many technological advancements and also scientists and doctors have researched more on how to cure them, there is still fear among people when it comes to the heart. But now with time, the fear is slowly reducing due to which babies are healthy and happy.
