People who are all for trying out different cuisines and restaurants and people who enjoy eating, are the ones who suffer the most from acidity, acid reflux, heartburn or GERD-gastroesophageal reflux disease. The most tempting feeling after lunch or dinner is the urge to just SLEEP. Many even go ahead and do that only to suffer for the rest of the day.
What do they suffer from?
People who overeat and sleep off immediately after meals, tend to suffer from this condition called acid reflux also known as heartburn.
What is heartburn?
The burning pain you feel in your chest, just behind your breastbone which is worsened after eating, in the evening, or when lying down or bending over is known as a heartburn. It is an irritation of the esophagus caused by stomach acid.
What are the symptoms of heartburn?
As mentioned above, the most common symptom of heartburn is a burning sensation in the chest, accompanied by
- Sour taste at the back of the throat
- Bitter or acidic taste in the mouth
- Regurgitation of food
- Feeling of food being stuck in the throat
Why do you get a heartburn?
When you swallow food, there is a band of muscle around the bottom of your esophagus known as the lower esophageal sphincter, which relaxes to allow food and liquid to flow down into your stomach, and then it contracts again.
The issue occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter relaxes abnormally or weakens, causing the stomach acid to flow back into your esophagus or food pipe. This occurrence of this is called acid reflux which causes heartburn. The acid backup may be worse when you’re bent over or lying down.
How to prevent heartburn?
The first step to prevent heartburn is to alter your lifestyle. Eat a healthy diet in proper proportions, exercise and avoid eating food that is acidic in nature, especially when you know know that you will lie down soon or there will not be much time for the food to be digested.
