When it comes to living in the 21st century, or the ‘Digital Age’, almost everything we do on a regular basis has become mechanical or more readily available. If before, people had to walk a kilometer or so to get a bus or a taxi to get to work, now, the taxi comes to you.
Or if at office, you had to walk for a while to have a cup of coffee or tea, even that now gets directly delivered to your doorstep. Thanks to technology, you have become immobile without even having a physical ailment. So, when you have everything doing the work for you, when there is good food which you love which is also junk and of course, some aerated drinks to go with it, it is the recipe for weight gain and eventual obesity says Dr Venugopal Pareek.
Obesity in India has been on the rise since the early 2000s and has seen an alarming increase in the past few years. It is important to correct it so as to reduce risks of heart diseases or other conditions. But what happens or what do you do when your exercise regime and diet fails you? Do you give up? No. Even if your diet and exercise does not work out, there is a third option which is being adopted by many people across the globe and which also gives effective results in loss of weight. Bariatric Surgery.
What is Bariatric Surgery?
Firstly, just because this is a surgery, doesn’t mean that there is something to fear. This is one of the most commonly done surgeries all over the world with an extremely high success rate.
The surgery is done to reduce weight by restricting the amount of food which you eat and also to ensure that your stomach cannot take more than a certain amount of food said Dr Venugopal Pareek. However, not everyone can get a bariatric surgery. There are a various factors which needs to be kept in check to determine if you should get the surgery done. To know more, Visit Sunshine Hospitals.
Types of Bariatric Surgery
The types of bariatric surgery is dependent on the surgeon and what he or she thinks is best for your condition and also the type of obesity you have. Apart from that, any kind of bariatric surgery is aimed at the stomach and to reduce its capacity of food.
There are mainly three types of bariatric surgery:
Sleeve Gastrectomy The process of Sleeve Gastrectomy is where a certain part of your stomach is first separated and then removed from your body. Once that is surgically done, the remaining part of the stomach takes the form of a tubelike structure and ultimately results in the size of the stomach being smaller. Due to the reduction in size, the stomach’s intake of food is considerably less but it does not affect the absorption of nutrients from the food eaten. Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass For the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, the surgeon surgically creates a small pouch above the stomach. This pouch is the only part of the stomach which gets food. When this is done, a great amount of food intake is limited compared to what you can normally eat and drink during one meal of the day.
Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding For the procedure of laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, a band containing an inflatable balloon is placed surgically around the upper part of the stomach and is fixed. This creates a small stomach pouch above the band with a very narrow opening to the rest of the stomach therefore limiting the amount of food which enters. The gastric band restricts the amount of food entering into the stomach which makes you feel ‘full’ faster than usual but this doesn’t reduce the absorption of nutrients and calories from what you eat. If you think, that your diet and exercise is not helping to curtail or reduce your weight and the limit of food is not happening, Visit Us at Sunshine Hospitals and our Bariatric Surgeons can help you with losing weight through bariatric surgery.
