Issues Of The Spine During And After Pregnancy
As much as most women would like to experience motherhood, they are also aware of all the bodily changes pregnancy can bring with it.
Even though it is one of the most beautiful feelings in the world, yet pregnancy is not easy. It gets tougher and tougher as the days and months pass by. Various complications might occur, some serious and some not but however, as a mother, one must try to be calm at all times, so as to not affect the baby. If there are serious problems specially any kind of pain in the body, a visit to your doctor or us at Sunshine Hospitals, is a practical option and beneficial as well.
Serious problems, which affect pregnant women are many. They can differ from one person to another, however, there are a few which many women go through, such as back pain and sciatica pain.
Even though back pain is quite normal during pregnancy, it can increase or can harm your body to a great extent if you have had a preexisting condition. Excessive pressure on the back can often lead to various issues in the spine which might affect you as a mother.
What are the conditions of your back which might affect you before and after pregnancy?
There are studies which show that most often lower back pain in pregnancy occurs between the fifth and seventh month of being pregnant. In other cases, pregnancy pain in the lower back can begin as early as 8 to 12 weeks after becoming pregnant as well.
There are mainly two common types of back pain in pregnancy:
- Lower or Lumbar Back Pain
- Pelvic Girdle Pain
It is essential to know the difference between these two types of back pain in pregnancy and labor pain, which is also felt in the back during pregnancy so that once won’t be confused as the other.
Most Common Causes
- previous low back pain
- High BMI
- Biomechanical changes and increases spinal load
- General increase in mobility of joints in pregnancy
- Increase in abdominal diameter
- Fetal weight
- Reproductive hormones
Lower Back Pain:
When it comes to lower back pain, the pain is generally located at the waist and areas above in the centre. This lower back pain in pregnancy might or might not be concurrent with pain that radiates into your leg or foot. The pain which radiates to the foot is known as sciatica which is also a common occuring of back pain in women. However, if the pain radiates to the foot it is important that you visit the doctor.
Lumbar pain during pregnancy is very similar to the lower back pain experienced by women who are not pregnant as well. This type of pain typically increases with prolonged postures of your body such as sitting, standing, or repetitive lifting.
Pregnancy Pelvic Pain
Posterior pelvic pain which occurs in the area behind the pelvis is more prevalent than lumbar pain in pregnancy. A deep pain is felt below and to the side at the waistline, or even below the waistline on either side across the tailbone. Pregnancy pelvic pain may be experienced on one or both sides.
Posterior pelvic pain in pregnancy can often extend down into the buttock and upper portion of the thighs, mainly occurring in the posterior region, and it does not usually radiate below the knees. The pain unfortunately does not quickly resolve with rest, and morning stiffness may also be present.
Post Birth Back Pain
Most of the mothers out there, know what post partum back pain is. However, that pain is usually related to the hormones which affect your whole body.
Epidural steroid injections do not cause any back pain post pregnancy, it is a myth.
These are the main types of back pain which occurs during pregnancy and this might be present even after the birth of the baby. However, with medication and physical therapy, over time, the pain tends to go away. Exercises and physical therapy is the most beneficial to treat this kind of pain and it is essential that you consult a doctor before this condition gets the better of you.
