Preparing for Surgery

When you and your doctor have decided to get a surgery done then the doctor’s office will plan your surgery or procedure and a pre-admission appointment to assist you. The availability dates and times of your surgery / procedure will be duly notified by the Doctor’s office.

Depending on the type of surgery/procedure you are about to have, you will be scheduled under one of the following programs:

Same Day Admission (SDA): is when patients are admitted to the hospital on the day of the surgery itself.

Monitored Stay: is when patients are scheduled for outpatient procedures but remain in an inpatient bed for the purpose of post-surgery/post-procedure monitoring.

Ambulatory Surgery: is when patients come in as outpatients, get their surgery/procedure done, recover and then go back home.

What to do before surgery?

  • It is advisable not to drink or eat after midnight the night before your surgery unless advised to do so by the doctor. Food in the stomach can lead to problems during surgery.  Surgery has been cancelled or postponed due to eating and drinking.
  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco 24 hours prior to your surgery
  • Remove nail polish or other body adornments before your surgery
  • Don’t carry expensive jewellery or large sums of money to the hospital
  • Inform your doctor or healthcare professional if you are taking medication for high blood pressure, anticoagulant (blood thinning), diabetes or a nervous disorder or if you've developed cold, fever, respiratory infection or any other illness prior to surgery
  • Women must notify the surgeon if they think they may be pregnant
  • Parents and Guardians of Minors should be present with patient from the time of arrival to sign paperwork and should remain in the facility during their entire visit

What to do on the morning of surgery?

  • Please bathe or shower on the morning of surgery and avoid using hair spray, body lotion or makeup. Also, make sure your hair is dry
  • We will provide you with a gown, robe and slippers so wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing before your receive them
  • Make adequate time to complete the admission procedures by arriving early
  • If you are on a regular dose of medication then do remember to bring it in the original bottle
  • Carry medical requisites such as insurance forms, medical cards, payment and any relevant test results
