Injury has become a major cause of death and disability worldwide. It is true that no one expects to be injured; however in most of the cases, "accidents" are preventable. Injury (trauma) is the leading cause of death for all age groups under the age of 44. It is remains one of the significant public health issues' haunting the World, yet the problem continues to go largely unrecognized. Motor vehicle crashes, fire injuries represent the two major causes of trauma and death. Drowning, falls, poisoning represent other common causes of trauma. Drowning is the fourth most common cause of unintentional injury death for all ages, ranking first among person's ages 25 to 44 and second for ages 5 to 44. Falls are the second-leading cause of accidental deaths for persons age 45 to 75 and the number-one cause of unintentional death for persons 75 years of age and older. Alcohol and drug use are directly or indirectly responsible for 75-80% of these injuries. Definition: Trauma is the branch of surgical medicine that deals with treating injuries caused by an impact. Many trauma patients are the victims of car crashes, stabbing's and gun shot wounds. Trauma can also be caused by falls, crush type injuries and pedestrians being struck by a car. In the case of severe trauma, such as a catastrophic car crash, the trauma surgeon may be one part of a surgical team that includes vascular surgeons (to repair damage to blood vessels), orthopedic surgeons (to repair broken bones) and other surgeons as needed. Care and Services: Appropriate services for victims of non-fatal injuries can prevent future fatalities, reduce the amount of short-term and long-term disability, and help those affected to cope with the impact of the injury event on their lives. The specific aims of strengthening such services are to treat injuries and minimize harm and suffering in both the short and long term; reduce the likelihood of secondary victimization - both intentional and unintentional - by service providers; facilitate redress through the criminal justice system, civil claims courts and other victim compensation mechanisms where possible; reduce the likelihood that individuals will suffer repeat injury in the future or, in relation to violence, that victims themselves will become perpetrators. Definition of Head Injury: A head injury is any trauma that leads to injury of the scalp, skull, or brain. The injuries can range from a minor bump on the skull to serious brain injury. Head injury is Classified as either Closed or Open (penetrating): A closed head injury means you received a hard blow to the head from striking an object, but the object did not break the skull. An open, or penetrating, head injury means you were hit with an object that broke the skull and entered the brain. This usually happens when you move at high speed, such as going through the windshield during a car accident. It can also happen from a gunshot to the head.
