Manage Weight

Excess abdominal fat increases the pressure in the abdomen. Owing to this reason pregnant women and obese people are prone to heartburn. Therefore, losing weight and abdominal fat should be the top priority to prevent heartburn.

Avoid Spicy Foods

Many foods can trigger heartburn and some people find spicy foods to be the worst offenders. However, this may not be the case with others. But, if you think that spicy foods are making the symptoms of heartburn worst, then it is better to avoid them as they irritate stomach lining.

Avoid Large Meals

Eating larger meals can worsen the symptoms of heartburn. The symptoms associated with acid reflux manifest after having a meal. Therefore, the best way to minimize the pressure and the risk of heartburn is to avoid eating larger meals.

Avoid Carbonated Beverages

Carbonated beverages have carbon dioxide gas. It causes belching more often in people who drink them. Due to belching the acid escaping into the esophagus from the stomach increases. Carbonated beverages thus augment the symptoms of heartburn.

Raise the Head of your Bed

People who experience acid reflux symptoms during night may have disturbed sleep and find it difficult to sleep. Raising the head of the bed can significantly reduce heartburn and acid reflux symptoms. This can be a best strategy to reduce heartburn symptoms at night.

Quit Smoking

Smoking can stimulate stomach to make excess acid, dries the mouth, reduces saliva production, damages mucus membranes, slows or prevents muscles reflexes and thus prevents the lower esophageal spincter muscles from working properly. Smoking may increase the risk of acid reflux and heartburn.

Avoid Alcohol

Alcohol causes more harm than short-term benefits. Excessive alcohol intake aggravates the symptoms of acid reflux. Those who are susceptible to acid reflux and heartburn, should avoid alcohol consumption. This will help in relieving symptoms and easing pain associated with heartburn.

Avoid Caffeinated Beverages

Caffeinated beverages and the ingredients present in them could play a role in worsening the symptoms of heartburn. If you notice, worsening of heartburn symptoms after drinking coffee, it is better to avoid coffee and any other beverage that contains caffeine.

Avoid Lying down after a Meal

People with acid reflux are generally advised to avoid eating within the three hours before they go to sleep. Eating close to bed time and lying down immediately after having a meal can worsen the symptoms of heartburn.

Avoid Preserved and Packed Foods as they can also cause the symptoms associated with acid reflux and heartburn.
