You were always told that kidney beans are good for your kidneys.
The thing is kidney beans are a good source of good nutrition. But are they good for your kidneys? Well, that depends on the health of your kidneys. While they are good for healthy kidneys, they might not be very good if you have a kidney problem.
So, how can you keep your kidneys healthy?
Let’s check out a few basic tips that can keep your kidneys healthy.
When it come to the kidney, water is your elixir.
Drink water, lots of it. Your kidney needs water to function properly. And how much water you need each day depends on the climatic conditions, your level of activity and your rate of metabolism. For a regular human being 2-3 liters of water should suffice. But again, make sure to not over do it. Excessive drinking of water will exert extra pressure on your kidneys.
Eat the right things, at the right time, in the right quantity.
A quick google search will give you a list of all the things you need to eat or avoid to get healthy kidneys. But the gist is limit your intake of protein and salt. In other words, eat less salt, meat and nuts. However, milk and fish, though contain protein, but they are also good sources of calcium which is good for your kidneys.
Control your high blood pressure, diabetes or obesity.
These increases the chance of getting a kidney problem. Do not forget your medicines. Avoid eating fast food and packaged food. Caffeine and carbonated drinks contain a lot of sugar and can actually dehydrate you even further.
Fitness always pays.
There are no exercises meant just for your kidneys. But you can exercise to reduce the factors which increase the risk of getting kidney problems. So, be on the move; do some exercises. Maintain a healthy weight.
Supplements are good; but only the prescribed ones and not the OTC ones.
A health conscious person never underestimates the power of supplements. Supplements give the extra boost which age takes away from you or which your diet cannot suffice. But did you know, unsupervised intake of supplements can actually ruin your kidneys? So, visit a doctor and get the correct dose for your supplements. Stay away from painkillers as far as possible.
No smoking and no alcohol, duh!
It goes without saying that tobacco, alcohol and drug abuse can ruin your health in so many different ways. But just to reinforce the same, remember that smoking and drinking alcohol can be fatally damaging to your kidneys. Smoking can damage your blood vessels and can prevent blood from flowing into your kidneys.
Do you have the genes for kidney problems? Stay alert.
Sometimes, you can be the most obedient follower of all the health rules and you can still develop a kidney disease if you have the genetic disposition of it. If a close relative is suffering from a kidney problem you have the chance of getting it too. Kidney diseases are not communicable and one person in the family having a kidney problem does not conclusively mean that you have a kidney-defect-gene. But still, stay alert.
Visit a doctor.
The most important and also the most ignored tip for healthy kidneys is visiting an expert. If you are at a risk of getting a kidney problem, don’t skip a doctor’s appointment. Sometimes, kidneys are invaded silently and you don’t see an indicator until it’s too late. So, book an appointment with a nephrologist even if you don’t see any visible risks.
