Experience world-class respiratory care at Sunshine

Your lungs are the filter of air in your body. When you inhale the air outside, it is usually filled with harmful substances but your lungs filter the air you breathe, adding oxygen to the blood received from the heart. This blood goes back to the heart from there, to other parts of your body. The carbon dioxide in the air is let out when you exhale.

Respiratory diseases

If you or anyone you know is having a breathing issue or shortness of breath, it does not always indicate that they or you have a respiratory disease.

However, if it is continuous, it does indicate a respiratory disease.

Lung and respiratory diseases are common all over the world, specially in India. A country where smoking and pollution is usually always high, lung diseases are inevitable. Genetics plays a very important role as well.

There are many diseases which are respiratory in nature, the most common being asthma. Apart from asthma, there is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Pneumonia, Bronchitis, Tuberculosis and many more.

In some of these diseases such as asthma and COPD, the disease attacks the trachea which is your windpipe while for the other diseases such as Pneumonia and tuberculosis, the disease attacks the alveoli or commonly called the air sacs, present in your lungs.

How do you know if you have a Respiratory Disease?

There have been a few additions to the equipment at the Pulmonology department at Sunshine Hospitals which makes us one of the most advanced and efficient in the city.

Pulmonary Function Testing:

Sunshine Hospitals has a highly advanced PFT machine which has the ability to perform studies on Diffusion. This technology helps in the diagnosing of diseases such as COPD and ILD at a very early stage when the spirometry of the person is normal.

We are also going to be adding Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing, being the first in the twin cities to do so. This test will help us diagnose and differentiate between breathing disorders of the lung and that of the heart.

Video Bronchoscopy:

The procedure of video bronchoscopy is one which allows examining the airways of the lungs. Video bronchoscopy can be done either to find out more about an existing problem or to find out about a possible problem.

The Pulmonology Department at Sunshine Hospitals also consists of a state-of-the-art Olympus Video Bronchoscope with ultra-clear vision. Any kind of intervention which needs to be done when it comes to Bronchitis, this machine can do it including video recording as well.

Endobronchial Ultrasound is one the premier devices which combines the technology of ultrasound with a bronchoscope. This device is a revolution in the diagnosis of the staging of lung cancer and also in the diagnosis of Tuberculosis and sarcoidosis.

Lesions outside the bronchi can be visualised and sampled with more precision with this device.

Minimally-Invasive Thoracoscopy

Other frontier additions to the equipments are the Pulmonology department include the ultra thin rigid thoracoscope and the Olympus flexi-rigid video thoracoscope. These two machines help in the diagnosis and treatment of pleural diseases such as pleural effusion and pneumothorax. Usage of this machine only involves a small incision on the skin and faster recovery.
