Got Dental Implants? Here’s How You Should Take Care Of Them
You realise the value of something only after you no longer have it.
Dental hygiene might not be on your priority list, but the moment you lose a tooth – be it because of bad oral health, trauma or age, you realise that teeth are not just important aesthetically, but also for the bite and speech.
One way in which you could get back teeth that you’ve lost is through a dental implant.
With technology and skilled dentists, dental implants are no longer anything to be scared of. We understand that going for a dental implant could come with apprehensions, which is why we ensure effective treatment and great results.
Now that you know why it’s essential for you to visit a reputed clinic to undergo a dental implant procedure, you should also know that the recovery depends largely on you. If you’ve recently undergone a dental implant surgery, here are a few things you should do.
Follow A Healthy Diet
It is recommended for you to start having soft food initially. Once you feel that you are capable of having a normal diet you can switch from soft food. Always stay hydrated. It is important that you should intake plenty of fluids.
As soon as you get your dental implants done it is important to avoid the intake of hot drinks or food. You can eat or drink edibles that are cold for the first day until the local anaesthesia wears off. You should also avoid touching it with tongue or fingers.
For the first two days after your surgery, it is better not to go to the gym or do any strenuous exercises.
Maintain Proper Oral Hygiene
The success of an oral surgery depends on how clean the mouth is kept. You should start cleaning your teeth as normal with a toothbrush, as soon as your surgery is done. Avoid brushing the area of surgery for the first few days, later after a few days start cleaning the area carefully. Hot salt mouthwashes help you for healing in the first week.
But ensure that the mouthwash is not too hot. Repeat this often. Try not to chew food in the surgical area for as long as possible. Rinse your mouth well after eating to keep the area clean. Say no to smoking until the wound gets healed, as smoking limits healing in the mouth. If you want your mouth to be recovered smoothly it is vital to follow these instructions very carefully.
Consult Your Dentist Regularly
It is very much important to have post evaluation checkup as well. It is very common to have pain and swelling after the surgery, there is no need to worry, it gets resolved on its own. Do not try to use medications without consulting the dentist, it can aggravate the pain and cause serious damage. Swelling can be reduced by applying ice packs and holding on the cheek area for a maximum of ten minutes.
While sleeping, use two to three pillows. Pain can be easily managed with simple analgesics/painkillers. Take your first dose of painkiller before the local anaesthetic completely wears off. If the pain and swelling increase after a few days, you should consult your dentist so that he can be sure that there is no infection. If you are given a prosthesis or a night guard to wear on, make sure that you use it regularly at least for ten days for fast results. Also, make sure that you are taking your antibiotics regularly to avoid infection.
