Headaches And Its Types
Headache is a symptom of pain which occurs in the region of the head or neck. It is easy to distinguish different types of headaches if you can notice the symptoms associated with your headaches. However, there are some factors which play an essential role in primary headaches includes blood circulation, blood vessels, hormones, nerves, and some changes in the chemical activity in the brain and muscles.

- Tension or Stress-related headaches
- Cluster headaches
Apart from these types, some other types of headaches are associated with some underlying conditions – such as fever, cold, flu, allergies and sometimes after sexual intercourse are also considered as primary headaches.
In some cases, they may also cause due to unhealthy lifestyles such as sleeplessness, excessive consumption of alcohol, drugs; improper body postures, stress, depression, anxiety, insomnia and eating habits.
Secondary headaches are triggered by other disease or illness or due to any other secondary cause i.e any health condition, disease or illness which can trigger the pain-sensitive nerves that leads to a headache are known to be secondary headaches.
Any individual can be subjected to a secondary headache who have particular health conditions which include problems associated with the vagus nerve, excessive stress, brain stroke, hangovers, ear infection, cold, high fever, sinusitis, head injury, internal bleeding due to brain aneurysm, high blood pressure, brain infections, meningitis and encephalitis.
Sometimes headaches are also caused due to dental cavities, tooth sensitivity. Headaches can also occur after consuming cold food items like pastries, ice-creams, and after drinking chilled soft drinks.
When you should visit a doctor?
If your headache is more painful, disruptive and if it worsens and fails to improve with medication and associated with other symptoms such as confusion, fever, sensory changes, and stiffness in the neck you should visit a doctor immediately.
Sometimes it becomes very difficult to identify the type of headache you are suffering from. So, it is better to seek medical help immediately. Sometimes, headaches may occur suddenly and become very severe in a matter of few minutes or hours. In such cases, without wasting your time contact your neurologist and seek medical help immediately.
Some types of headaches don’t get better even after taking counter medicines pain relievers on a regular basis for a few days or more than a week. In such conditions, if you don’t get any relief from your headaches, then you should immediately call your neurologist and seek his or her appointment.
One should never neglect such types of headaches because they may be signal of some sort of underlying health condition, which may require medical intervention. Sometimes, such type of headaches may fall under meningitis, encephalitis or stroke-related headaches etc.
When You Should Seek Emergency Care?
Emergency care becomes pertinent for you – in other words, becomes compulsory – if your headaches are accompanied with the following symptoms:
- Drooping face, difficulty in moving the tongue, trouble while speaking, listening and understanding
- Severe body pains, high fever (greater than 102 F to 104 F) and stiff neck
- Trouble while walking and moving around
- Vision problems like blurred vision
- Confusion, hallucinations or Delirium
- Weakness in one side of the body particularly in one arm and leg
- Weakness in one or both the arms
- Faintness, sudden vomiting
- Nausea and vomiting if it is not related to a migraine, flu or cold or to any other health issue
- Numbness, body weakness or paralysis on one side
