Citrus fruits contain less sugar and citric acid – apart from the taste both lemon and lime offer similar vitamins and minerals like other citrus fruits. Therefore, they can be used for preparing a tangy juice or fruit salad or can also be added to any other non-vegetarian dish as well. The following are the health benefits of lemons and limes.

Keep wrinkles at bay

Any person irrespective of the normal ageing process can keep his or her skin strong, supple, exuberant and healthy by taking a healthy diet with proper nutrients – vitamins and minerals. Vitamin C is one such antiaging vitamin as it helps keep skin healthy by making collagen. Vitamin C can not be produced in the body. It has to be consumed from the food one eats. Vitamin C is abundant in both these fruits. The normal or natural ageing process can be slowed down with apt nutrition that offers the right proportion of vitamins and minerals.

Provide energy & help in the growth

A small and medium-sized lime or lemon has a small amount of riboflavin and thiamine – the B complex vitamins that are essential for the conversion of food into energy our body needs. In addition, these vitamins help in the normal growth and proper functioning of body cells. Thus, both lime and lemon help in revitalizing body cells.

Provide antioxidants

There are plenty of antioxidants including flavonoids, vitamin C, coumarins, essential oils and phenolic compounds in limes and lemons. These are all excellent antioxidants capable of fighting free radicals that damage body cells.

Help your baby grow

Citrus fruits like lemon and lime contain a very special B vitamin called folate or folic acid. Though it is present in small amounts in these fruits, it is helpful in the growth of the baby in the womb. Folate is helpful in cell division and the formation of genetic material – both these processes help in the growth of the baby by forming new cells.

Lower blood pressure

Lemon juice is good for managing high blood pressure. If you squeeze a lemon in a glass of water and have it before and after you go for a walk, it will be helpful for you. However, if you take blood pressure medicines, then talk to your doctor as citrus fruits can interfere with them. In addition, if you are taking any other medicines then it would be better to inform the doctor about all the alternative high blood pressure managing methods you adopt. Don’t drop any medicine or try to adjust one unless you talk with your doctor.

Help check cancer

Lemon and lime fruits are jampacked with antioxidants – in other words, they are the powerhouses of antioxidants. Antioxidants fight against the free radicals and prevent cell damage and thus keep cells in good shape. Therefore, they help in checking cancer in the first place. Though there is no scientific evidence that suggests that limes or lemons can fight cancer, yet owing to the abundance of antioxidants, they are helpful in keeping lungs, liver, colon, stomach and breast cells healthy.
