What is Bariatric Surgery you might ask?
The procedure of bariatric surgery aims to reduce your weight by restricting the amount of food which your stomach can take. This in turn causes malabsorption of nutrients. To know more on the process, visit us at Sunshine Hospitals or book an appointment so our doctors who are experienced in Bariatric Surgery can guide you. However, there are various types of bariatric surgery which is decided and done after consultation and different tests, to know which type of surgery will be the best for you.
What are the types of Bariatric Surgery?
Bariatric surgery helps in the loss of weight and restricts the gaining of weight again along with reducing the risk of metabolic problems which arise from obesity.
The bariatric surgery contributes in the process of weight loss in two ways which are restriction, where the surgery physically limits the intake of food and your stomach’s capacity to hold the food. This ultimately limits the number of calories you consume in a day. Apart from this, malabsorption is another achievement of bariatric surgery where your small intestine is shortened to absorb less nutrients from the food you eat.
There are three major types of bariatric surgery which are also commonly used all over the world. They are:Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass In this type of bariatric surgery, the surgeon creates a small pouch above the stomach. This pouch is the sole receiver of food in the whole of the stomach. By doing this, a great amount of food intake is limited compared to what you can normally eat and drink during one meal of the day.
Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding
In the procedure of laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, a band containing an inflatable balloon is placed surgically around the upper part of the stomach and is fixed in place. This in turn creates a small stomach pouch above the band with a very narrow opening to the rest of the stomach therefore curtailing the amount of food which enters into the stomach. The gastric band restricts the amount of food entering into the stomach which makes you feel ‘full’ faster than you normally would but this doesn’t reduce the absorption of nutrients and calories from what you eat.
In a sleeve gastrectomy process, a part of the stomach is separated and removed from your body. The remaining section of the stomach is forms into a tubelike structure. This results in the stomach being smaller and not being able to hold as much food as before. Just like laparoscopic Gastric banding, this procedure also does not affect the absorption of nutrients. Weight gain is one of the easiest things to do in the world, however weight loss on the other hand is very tough. If you think that diet and exercises is not ‘working out’, visit us or book an appointment at Sunshine Hospitals so we can help you with living a better life without any fear of diseases.
