How Does Smoking Affect Your Lungs?
You must have all gone to a movie theatre at some point of time and either seen Rahul Dravid talking about how smoking causes cancer or seen a video of people who are suffering from major illnesses due to smoking or chewing tobacco.
You might get irritated or frustrated with those advertisements, but you all must know about the harmfull effects of tobaccco as someone or the other known to you smokes, right?
It does not only cause cancer. Smoking affects almost every other major organ of the body, but most importantly it affects the lungs and heart.
Do you know how does smoking affect your lungs?
Tobacco once burnt or smoked, is said to produce around 4000 chemicals which includes tar, carbon monoxide and most importantly nicotine.
When it comes to the lungs, the changes are dangerous and and damages done are often to a great extent. Depends on how much of a smoker you are. But the misconception of “I smoke only one or two cigarettes a day, it won’t affect my lungs so much” is wrong. Even if you smoke few cigarettes per day for many years (smoking index) it still affects your health to a great extent.

Smoker’s Cough – Smoking can often cause excessive coughing at some point of time and it is often continuous. It is known as ‘Smoker’s cough’ as it is known to be persistent for about 2 weeks or even more. Smoker’s cough usually is seen in long term smokers. How is it caused? The cough is the body’s way of clearing out the harmful chemicals which enter the body through smoking. The cough starts out as a normal one but eventually is accompanied with a significant amount of phlegm. The cough often causes a sore throat and pain in the chest. If not addressed, the cough can eventually lead to the condition of bronchitis.
Chronic Bronchitis – Bronchitis is a condition which occurs when the bronchial tubes in your body swells up or gets inflamed. Chronic bronchitis can be the diagnosis when a person suffers from a cough which is continuous and is accompanied with production of sputum. The cough goes on everyday for at least 3 months and can go on for about 2 years. The major cause of bronchitis and one which is most commonly seen is smoking. The tobacco and other chemicals inhaled during smoking can cause severe irritation in the bronchial tubes and eventually causing them to swell up. If not treated in time, bronchitis can lead up to more severe conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder(COPD) and also respiratory failure which at some times may lead to death. Smoking causes 83% of deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Emphysema – The condition of emphysema is a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder is a form of chronic lung disease. Emphysema is a condition which occurs when the air sacs in your lungs gets damaged and cannot function. Due to this, the constant and clean air flow in the lungs is obstructed leading to shortness of breath and the inflammation of lungs. Tobacco is one of the main causes of this condition as the chemicals in tobacco destroys the linings of the air sacs.
Lung Cancer – One of the major and most dangerous conditions which continuous and long term smoking can cause is lung cancer. . Smoking causes 84% of deaths from lung cancer
