How To Deal With Ankle Sprain?
Most people are just prone to accidents, they’d trip and fall, and bang their legs into the wall; we wouldn’t be wrong in figuratively saying that they were born with two left feet. Pains and aches just become a part of their existence. But these little injuries like a sprain or a catch can become a cause of concern if neglected. This can especially be seen in sports enthusiasts like footballers who ignore their little sprains and catches and wait for them to turn into major injuries. When it comes to ankle sprains, they can be very painful and worsen to become chronic debilitating condition if not treated in time. Scroll down to understand what an ankle sprain is and how to deal with them.
The joint bone that connects your foot with the lower leg is surrounded by tough bands of tissues known as ligaments. These ligaments have a limited range of motion that allows the joints to remain stable. When the movement is forced out of their limited range, the ankle is said to have suffered a sprain.
What are the causes?
When the ligaments are stretched more than their range allows them to, especially when your foot is turned inward or outward accidentally, is when your ankle is sprained mostly. Other causes for a sprain are injuries from sports, walking on uneven surfaces, and even wearing the wrong footwear which could lead to a sprain. Your tendons, cartilage, and blood vessels also have a risk to be damaged due to the sprain.
What are the symptoms of a sprained ankle?
As a result of the tears and injury, you are likely to feel pain or discomfort when you place weight on your ankle. Other symptoms include,
- Swelling: because of increased fluid in the tissue
- Skin discolouration: Redness and warmth caused by increased blood flow to the area.
How can you manage pain by yourself?
- Wearing an elastic brace or bandage
- Elevating your foot with pillows to manage to swell
- Cold compression
- Over the counter anti-inflammatory medications
How can the condition be managed through medical intervention?
- Bed rest
- If the condition is unmanageable or accompanied by a bony injury only then do we recommend surgery
