Fatigue or weakness


Is Fatigue, Chronic Fatigue, and weakness are the same or can these terms be used interchangeably: Weakness is different wherein a person feels the loss of power or strength along with drowsiness, but fatigue refers to complete lack of energy owing to which a person feels very tired without feeling sleepy or drowsy. Therefore, even if some people use both these terms interchangeably, they are considered as different from a medical perspective as the symptoms are distinctively different.

Chronic fatigue is one of the facets of chronic fatigue syndrome – which is a specific medical condition that involves more than fatigue. Chronic fatigue is therefore distinct from chronic fatigue syndrome. CFS is a long-term medical condition that is mostly associated with multiple symptoms. Once a person has been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, then there is little or no possibility of chronic fatigue being associated with any other underlying medical condition.

Fatigue is always a sign of serious medical condition – Is it True?

It is not always true that fatigue is an indication of an underlying serious health condition, but at times, it can be true as well. It is possible for everyone to suffer from fatigue at some point in their life, but in the majority of cases, it can be acute fatigue – the one that lasts for up to three months or less than that. Such type of fatigue is usually caused by poor diet, overexertion, physical strain, sleeplessness, lack of nutrients – which may be due to lifestyle or environmental factors. By approaching a healthcare practitioner in time can be beneficial for addressing lifestyle-related fatigue. However, if fatigue lasts for more than a few months or several months at a stretch, then it could be something to be worried about. In such cases, it is more likely that the fatigue could be associated with some underlying medical condition.

Women experience fatigue more often than men – is it true?

Yes, Of course! According to several scientific studies, women are up to four times more likely to develop chronic fatigue or chronic fatigue syndrome compare to men.

What causes Fatigue?

Lack of sleep, physical exertion, tiresome journey, inadequate diet lacking vitamins and minerals, long-term illness, physical exertion, poor appetite, any underlying health condition, smoking, alcohol use, drugs abuse, excessive caffeine intake, etc. can cause fatigue. Certain medical conditions like cancer, arthritis, and hypothyroidism can cause chronic fatigue.

Apart from these conditions, certain infections, autoimmune diseases, lupus, liver disease, heart disease, heart failure, severe anaemia, eating disorders, kidney diseases and a variety of other infections can also cause fatigue.

Certain prescription and non-prescription medicines can also cause fatigue – including steroids, chemotherapy for cancer treatment, over-the-counter medicines, antihistamines, painkillers, blood pressure medicines, illegal drugs, tranquillizers can also cause chronic fatigue. Long-term coffee usage can also cause withdrawal symptoms and fatigue.

When you feel like exhausted or very tired, then you should see a doctor to know the reason behind your fatigue because chronic fatigue can sometimes indicate any underlying medical condition.
