Laparoscopic Surgery For Hernia: An Overview
Most of you might have shifted houses at least once in your life. Or if not, you might have spent regular hours at the gym. Physical exercise eventually results in strain of the body. Of course that is the whole point of exercise, but anything extra, is harmful for the body. Continuous lifting of heavy objects, especially without stabilizing your abdominal muscles, leads to a condition which is dangerous and painful at the same time. This condition is called as Hernia.
What exactly is Hernia? Hernia is a condition which occurs when a fatty tissue or an organ as a whole squeezes out through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle. The condition of hernia is highly common and usually affects the people between the ages of 40-60 however, it can happen to anyone, irrespective of age. In most cases, case of hernia involves the stomach or the intestine.
What are the causes of Hernia? Technically, anything which causes pressure in the abdomen area can cause a hernia. Usually most hernias are caused by the combination of pressure and the weakness of a muscle or the opening of a muscle which might or might not be a result of the weakness.
Some of the causes of Hernia are:
- Constipation or Diarrhoea
- Lifting heavy objects without abdominal support
- Continuous coughing
- Poor Nutrition

Treatments of Hernia:
When it comes to the treatments for this condition, the primary treatments include lifestyle changes and medication. However, for the more severe cases of hernia, surgeries are essential. One such treatment is the Laparoscopic Surgery.
Laparoscopic Surgery for Hernia:
Also called the Keyhole Surgery, the laparoscopic surgery uses a medical instrument known as a Laparoscope to perform the surgery. As far as the procedure goes, two to four incisions are made through your abdominal wall. Through these incisions, a laparoscope along with other surgical instruments are inserted. A laparoscope is a thin telescope with a light at the end. This helps the doctor in navigating inside the abdomen of the patient. The main aim of the surgery is to inflate the abdominal cavity with carbon dioxide giving enough space for the instruments to work inside and to close the hernia hole with mesh within the abdomen itself and then medical staples are given through it, inside the muscle tissue to patch it up. The hernia can be viewed through the laparoscope and also is projected on a screen for the ease of the doctor. It is a minimally invasive surgery and since the incisions are that small, it is referred to as the Keyhole Surgery. The keyhole surgery is an effective procedure however there are quite a few disadvantages associated with it as well.
The disadvantages of laparoscopic hernia surgery are:
- This surgery requires a lot of experience and be perfect at it to some extent so that there are no complications during the surgery. But our team at Sunshine Hospitals has that kind of experience. So visit us, if you feel you are experiencing the symptoms of hernia.
- The laparoscopy though is minimal access is not minimal invasive as dissection done in lap hernia is more,so the recurrence rates are low
Even though there are certain serious disadvantages of a laparoscopic surgery for hernia, it is an effective surgery with advantages of time taken and less risk if you are under good hands. It is always better to get treated with less pain but with knowing that the condition is gone and you can have a better quality of life than before.
