How can Lung cancer be treated?
Treatment of lung cancer depends on a number of factors. Firstly it depends on the stage, the type and also depends on your health as well.
There are various types of treatments which can be an option but this is to be done only with the help of a doctor and post consultation.
Surgery: With any kind of cancer, surgery is the primary option for treatment. The aim of surgery is to remove the tumour from the lungs along with a small margin of healthy tissue as well.
Different procedures of surgery for lung cancer :
Wedge Resection – In this procedure, the surgeon removes a small section of the lung which contains the tumour along with a small portion of a healthy tissue.
Segmental Resection – This procedure removes a comparatively larger portion of the lung but not an entire lobe.
Lobectomy – As the name suggests, this type of surgery removes the entire lobe of one lung.
Pneumonectomy – This type of surgery removes one entire lung.
Radiation Therapy: Radiation therapy is one of the treatments for lung cancer which uses high-powered energy beams from various sources such as X-rays and protons to kill cancer cells. During radiation therapy, you lie on a table while a radiation machine moves around you, directing the radiation to precise points on your body.
For the people who have been suffering from locally advanced lung cancer, radiation might be used before surgery or even after surgery. It’s often combined with the various chemotherapy treatments. If surgery isn’t an option, combined chemotherapy and radiation therapy might be your primary treatment depending on other factors.
In case of lung cancers which are advanced and have spread to other areas of the body, radiation therapy might only help relieve symptoms, such as pain.
Chemotherapy: Most of you might know what chemotherapy is given how often this form of treatment is opted to treat cancer. The treatment of chemotherapy uses various drugs to kill the cancer cells in your lung. Depending on the severity, one of more drugs under the chemotherapy treatment is administered into the body of the patient. It can be oral or intravenous.
Chemotherapy or chemo treatment is done in cycles where the drugs are given in a series, over a period of weeks or months. This treatment is done to kill the cancer cells so that the tumour can be reduced to a smaller size, making it easier to remove.
If the cancer is advanced, chemotherapy helps with the reduction of pain.
Radiosurgery: This form of surgery is an option when the cancer is smaller and surgery cannot be done. Stereotactic body radiotherapy, which is also known as radiosurgery, is an highly intense radiation treatment which aims multiple beams of radiation from different angles at the cancer directly. Stereotactic body radiotherapy treatment is usually completed in one or a few treatments.
Immunotherapy: This form of lung cancer treatment uses your body’s immune system to fight the cancer. Many a times, your body’s immune system which is built for fighting diseases might not attack the cancer as the proteins which are released by cancer cells blind the cells of your immune system.
The treatment of immunotherapy prevents that from happening and is given to people who have an advanced stage of lung cancer.
Lung cancer is common, yet deadly. Even though there are many treatments to cure this type of cancer, you will require the help and experience of an expert surgeon who would know what treatment to give which will be best suited for your health and stage of cancer.
