Areas of treatment:
  • Stroke
  • Epilepsy
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Muscle diseases

  • Multiple sclerosis

The Neurosurgery Division is equipped with the talent and the infrastructure to perform procedures on both newborns and geriatric patients successfully.

Care Seekers have the assurance of a highly experienced team of surgeons, able support staff and a fully-equipped, dedicated Neuro Operation Theatre at their service.

Areas of treatment:
  • Arteriovenous malformations
  • Epidural haematoma
  • Subdural haematoma
  • Basilar skull fracture
  • Intraparenchymal haemorrhage
  • Traumatic nerve injury
  • Spinal fracture
  • Spinal cord injury
Treatment for paediatric neurosurgical conditions:
  • Hydrocephalus
  • Craniosynostosis
  • Tumours
  • Spina bifida
Treatment for chronic pain syndromes:

Neurosurgical procedures help people suffering from certain pain syndromes, particularly those with paroxysmal pain such as trigeminal and glossopharyngeal neuralgia. Procedures to treat chronic pain disorders such as trigeminal neuralgia include:

  • Microvascular decompression
  • Radio-frequency lesions
  • Deep-brain or motor cortex stimulation
Neurological treatment for movement disorders:

Spasmodic Torticollis is a neurological disorder that affects the muscles of the neck causing the head to pull, turn or jerk towards the shoulder. This is a chronic condition that can strike at any age and may last indefinitely. 3 out of every 10,000 people are affected by this syndrome!

Further, neurosurgical treatments are helpful for spasticity (muscle spasms, usually caused by stroke or other neurological diseases) of the arms and legs that. A variety of procedures is available at Sunshine Hospitals, to treat these disorders.

Tumour Surgery & Neuroendoscopy

Abnormal growth of cells in the brain or central spinal canal is defined as a tumour. In simple terms, tumours are created by an abnormal and uncontrolled cell division in the brain cells. The amount of danger associated with brain tumour depends on a combination of factors like the tumour type, tumour location, tumour size and tumour’s state of development. As the brain is well protected by the skull, tumour detection in early stages can happen only when the diagnostics tools are directed at the intracranial activity. Brain tumour detection occurs in advanced stages of tumours and causes symptoms that cannot be explained. At Sunshine Hospitals, we understand that brain tumours / neurological complications of other cancers, generally lead to severe consequences for the affected and their families. Extending care for the individual affected with the neuro-oncological disease is a challenging task as it requires efforts from different specialists. To this end, Sunshine’s multidisciplinary specialists work towards extending comprehensive neurosurgical care for brain and spinal tumours. Also, our team holds wide-ranging capabilities to treat cases of neuro-oncology including deep seated & skull base tumours that are operated via endoscope & through nose too. Alarming signals of a brain tumour:

  • First complaint of a headache in an individual over 50 years
  • First migraine attack on a person over 40 years
  • First complaint of a headache in a person below six years
  • Stiffness of the neck / neurological dysfunction
  • Vomiting in early morning or vomiting unrelated to a headache or other illnesses
  • Behavioural changes or rapid decline in school results
Areas Treated:
  • Benign and malignant tumours of
  • Brain
  • Spinal cord
  • Skull base
  • Spine in adults and children
  • Benign tumour – is a tumour that lacks the ability to metastasize i.e. such tumours lack the potential to spread from one organ or part to another non-adjacent organ or part.
  • Malignant tumour – is a tumour which becomes progressively worse and that holds a potential to cause death.

Neuroendoscopy is the process using a neuro endoscope with the help of a neuronavigation system to study the central nervous system and perform minimally invasive neurosurgical procedures. Neuroendoscopy is employed to treat brain tumours and hydrocephalus.

Cerebrovascular Diseases

Cerebrovascular disease is a broad term referring a group of brain dysfunctions affecting the blood vessels supplying the brain. While hypertension is the most common cause of cerebrovascular disease, smoking, obesity, and diabetes are other risk factors. Prolonged hypertension can cause irreversible changes in the structural design of the blood vessels making them narrow, stiff, deformed, uneven and more vulnerable to fluctuations in blood pressure. At Sunshine Hospitals, the best neurosurgeons from the neurosurgery speciality are committed to delivering the best keeping patient interests at the core.

Cerebrovascular Conditions Treated:
  • Aneurysms
  • Arteriovenous malformations
  • Stroke
Head Trauma:

Head Trauma is a major speciality within Neurosurgery division. Road traffic accidents (RTA) and falls from heights are some of the major causes of head trauma. Moreover, these occur in neonates and infants too! Typically, when parts of the head like skull are experienced severe fractures or become open, surgical repair is required. At Sunshine Hospitals, our team is fully equipped to take care of all types of head injury across all age groups of patients. The monitoring for patients with head injury is performed by intracranial pressure monitoring probe. Also, to extend constant care to the affected by head injuries, we have a dedicated ICU manned by intensivist round the clock.

Trauma Neurosurgical Conditions Treated:
  • Epidural hematoma
  • Subdural hematoma
  • Basilar skull fracture
  • Concussion
  • Intraparenchymal hemorrhage
  • Skull fracture
  • Traumatic nerve injury
Paediatric Neurosurgery

Our Paediatric Neurosurgery team specialises in the evaluation and treatment of children with a range of neurosurgical disorders, such as brain tumours, spasticity, movement disorders, intractable epilepsy, hydrocephalus, craniosynostosis, head injuries, and spina bifida, as well as other cranial malformations and spinal deformities. At Sunshine Hospitals, our team of surgeons work as part of a multifunctional team comprising paediatric practitioners.

Paediatric Neurosurgical Conditions Treated:
  • Hydrocephalus
  • Craniosynostosis
  • Tumors
  • Spasticity
  • Spina Bifida
  • Epidural hematoma
  • Subdural hematoma
  • Basilar skull fracture
  • Concussion
  • Intraparenchymal hemorrhage
  • Skull fracture
  • Traumatic nerve injury
Surgery for Parkinson’s Disease

The loss of nerve cells in the substantia nigra, a small area within the brainstem causes Parkinson’s disease, a progressive neurological disorder. In a majority of the cases, the cause is unknown. However, Parkinson’s-like conditions are visible after stroke, encephalitis, carbon monoxide or manganese poisoning and head trauma. However, the onset of symptoms is very subtle and can be seen in individuals aged over 50 years. Further, an important syndrome is trouble in the walking styles.

Surgery for epilepsy

Surgery is considered when for some people medications are of little help in controlling seizures. Over the years, surgery has proved to be a highly effective alternative to medicines. At Sunshine Hospitals, before commencing surgery for epilepsy, the benefits are thoroughly weighed against risks as there is no 100% guarantee in successfully controlling seizures. We recommend surgery to be performed quite early as studies have shown that there is a strong correlation between performing operations early and achieving better results. Also, surgery is considered because continued seizures and high doses of medication can prove taxing on intellectual, psychological, social, educational, and employment aspects of an individual’s life. Depending on the kind of seizures and the part of the brain from where they emanate, it is decided if surgery is required. The same things also will determine the particular type of operation that you should have. State-of-the-art technology at Sunshine Hospitals ensures safe and less-invasive procedure that will enable the individual to achieve the highest possible quality of life.
