Understanding Scarless Hysterectomy

For a woman, her uterus is a very important organ, as it is much needed for her menstrual cycles as well as for reproduction. However, when a woman has certain health issues, there is a procedure that’s performed to remove the whole uterus, or at least a part of it. This procedure is known as hysterectomy.

It is to be understood that being a delicate procedure, it requires a surgeon with expertise and skill. A Hysterectomy procedure is a somewhat complicated one, as it involves the removal of a woman’s uterus. The reason for this procedure for women are based on many purposes, such as –

  • Pain, bleeding and other problems caused by Uterine Fibroids
  • Uterine Prolapse, a problem where the uterus slides away from its original position and into the vaginal canal.
  • Cancer to the uterus, ovaries or cervix.
  • Abnormal bleeding from the vagina
  • Pelvic pain (chronic)
  • Adenomyosis, a condition where the uterus thickens.
  • Endometriosis

The hysterectomy procedure is a must for cancer-related problems, however, for conditions that are non-cancerous, the system itself is the last resort and only an option when all other methods attain failure.

Types of Hysterectomy –

Types of Hysterectomy

  • Subtotal Hysterectomy, in which the surgeon only removes the upper part of the uterus.
  • Total Hysterectomy, in which the surgeon removes the entire uterus and cervix
  • Radical Hysterectomy, during where the surgeon removes the whole uterus as well as the tissues on the sides of the uterus and cervix. In this procedure, the surgeon also removes the top part of the vagina. This procedure is usually done when the patient has cancer.

Radical Hysterectomy

Scarless Hysterectomy

Traditionally, Hysterectomy leaves a scar on the abdominal area where the surgeon conducts the procedure. In the new era, however, there are methods developed, wherein there is no scar left behind after a hysterectomy procedure. Scarless Hysterectomy is safer, more economical and is a choice for many cases where doctors might not want to conduct a full-fledged operation.

Technology has made it possible to have scarless hysterectomy procedures, which does not have an abdominal scar. In this method, the uterus or cervix is surgically removed through the vaginal. These are usually recommended for patients with cases of benign diseases. Research shows that 90% of Hysterectomy for mild conditions can be performed vaginally, and this procedure includes patients with large fibroids, endometriosis, patients with the history of a prior Cesarean section or any abdominal surgery, nulliparity or those who need to remove their ovaries.

Benefits of Scarless Hysterectomy

  • No scar, as opposed to a significant injury when the procedure is done through an opening on the abdomen.
  • Vaginal hysterectomies are generally associated with better outcomes than that of the abdominal ones.
  • Economically feasible.
  • Useful in the case where the patient has benign diseases.

Scarless hysterectomy may not be available for all kinds of problems with the uterus or the cervix, but there are many problems to which doctors would be able to recommend a scarless hysterectomy procedure. This effectively means that if the issues fall under the scarless method, then the patient might not need an abdominal version of hysterectomy.
