What Do You Know About Concussions?
You must have heard of a concussion. It is one of the most common and least severe kinds of traumatic brain injury, which only about shakes the person to the certain degree of unconsciousness. The name is derived from the Latin word, Concutere, which essentially means ‘to shake violently.’ A concussion is a traumatic brain injury which has very mild consequences. As for its cause, any impact on the head or an injury which could lead to temporary trauma to the brain could cause it. It’s common in people who are associated with impact sports like football or boxing. Although it could happen to anyone in the scenario of a car accident, fall or any small accidents while performing daily activities. Concussions, as you know cause no life-threatening consequences, however, they can cause severe symptoms that will require medical attention/treatment. It tends to create an altered mental state, which at times could also lead to unconsciousness. Symptoms of concussions
The level of the concussion is determined by the impact the cause might have. So are the symptoms, meaning, these will undoubtedly depend on the severity of the injury as well as the person involved. As for the difference, for instance, some people after suffering from a concussion might suffer from a period of unconsciousness, while others may not. Common symptoms for concussion are as follows –
- Memory loss
- Double or blurred vision
- Bodily imbalance
- A headache
- Slow reaction to stimuli.
As for the symptoms, they tend to begin immediately after the impact, but there have been cases where they have not developed for hours, weeks or even months after the original impact. At times, especially when the person is involved in any sports, there is an immediate need to consult a doctor after suffering from a concussion. There are instances where a spinal injury about an accident or a sports injury has led to concussions. Also in cases where the neck or any other vital part of the body gets injured and leads to a concussion, special care needs to be taken, and a hospital visit is a must on an immediate basis.
The first line of determination comes in the way of questions to the patient about the injury suffered., followed by a physical examination, to determine the exact symptoms. In cases that are considered more severe, doctors conduct an MRI or CT scan of the brain to check on the suspected brain injury. On the other hand, doctors are also required to perform an electroencephalogram in cases where there are seizures involved, as this test helps in monitoring brain waves. Other tests like a particular eye test or any other tests required to test the vision, pupil size, eye movements and sensitivities to light are also conducted, mostly in case of athletes or sports playing persons.
Treatment for concussions is also determined by the severity of the problem and the patient. In most cases, which are mild, doctors usually suggest over-the-counter medications and pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Other methods involve plenty of rest, avoiding strenuous activity for a prescribed amount of time as well as not riding or driving a vehicle for that duration, which typically ranges from 24-hours to possibly a few months. However, there are cases of severe concussions where the criticality is such that the patient might need surgery or other more advanced medical procedures to treat the same. Usually, it is the case with people who might have –
- Bleeding in the brain
- Swelling of the brain
- Serious injury to the brain
Concussions can happen to anyone, from an average person working to an athlete. It all depends on the severity, and the type of impact one must have had that led to a concussed state. In general, if you notice any of the above symptoms in yourself or others after a possible impact, injury or accident, consult a doctor immediately to understand the damage it could have done to the brain.
