What Is White Discharge?
Vaginal Discharge is an essential function of the female reproductive system, and are the fluid made by the glands present inside the cervix and the vagina. Their functionality is to carry the dead cells away as well as the bacteria, that could cause infections. Vaginal discharge is an essential function due to its ability to clean the vagina from the inside. Vaginal discharge is a very regular occurence. In most cases, the odour and colour of the discharge, when being normal varies from clear to white (colour). The amount of the discharge too varies in different situations. Women who are breastfeeding, ovulating or having sexual arousal can have different amounts of discharge. This quantity also depends on the time of the ongoing menstrual cycle. Vaginal discharge from pregnant women tends to smell differently, especially when there is a lack of care with personal hygiene. This type of release is pretty much a normal and is notice mostly during the middle of the cycle, or before/after the menstruation.
Women while they are pregnant also tend to notice this white discharge, and again, this is nothing to worry about. Some women also see the white release after interourse. Standard scenario and leaves the woman to not worry about it too much. On the other hand, the signs of a problem are signalled by a different coloured discharge and odour, followed by the consistency at which it is discharged. In problematic cases, there could be vaginal itching, burning or infections, and possibly complication created by another condition altogether.
What causes Abnormal Discharge?
Usually, an abnormal discharge, which is signalled with a change in colour and odour of the vaginal discharge occurs due to the imbalance of the healthy bacteria in the vagina. Other things that can affect this condition and create a massive imbalance includes –
- Birth control pills
- Cervical cancer
- Any antibiotics or steroids
- Bacterial vaginosis
- Pelvic infection post surgery
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Vaginal atrophy
- Yeast infections
What does a White discharge signify?
A healthy vagina will not discharge in a different colour, and usually, most healthy women tend to have a scanty amount of discharge, which is white in colour. This kind of discharge usually has no odour or any other problematic symptoms accompanying it.
Physiological causes for White Discharge –
- Pregnancy – During pregnancy, the white discharge is thin and contains a mild odour, but it is considered very much reasonable.
- Exercises – When there is an increase in physical activities than average or at times when the exertion is more, this discharge is caused.
- Sexual Activity – A white discharge was a result of the body’s natural response when sexually aroused.
- Ovulation – During this cycle, an increased discharge is noticed.
- Daily discharge – The white release is commonly a regular process as well. The only different aspect that it is the very negligible amount and only ends up leaving a faint discolouration on the underwear.
Overall, women experiencing this white discharge is a regular occurence, in many a daily activity, while in many others an occasional, periodic action. As long as the release is clear to white in colour, it is considered very much reasonable. In cases where there is a different coloured discharge, or when women notice itching and swelling in the vagina after the discharge, irrespective of the colour, there could be a problem brewing. Consult your gynaecologist if you see any of those abnormal activities.
