World ORS Day, 29 July 2019
July 29, 2001 declared as ORS Day by the Indian Academy of Pediatrics, is a part of significant effort, aimed at reducing childhood diarrhoea deaths. ORS Day is celebrated every year in this regard on July 29th 2019 at Sunshine Hospital Bhubaneswar with a mission to protect children from acute diarrhea and dehydration. ORS or oral rehydration Salts is also known as “oral rehydration solution”. This electrolyte solution is used for hydrating and compensate for the loss of salt and minerals in the body.
India is a country where acute diarrhea in children is increasing. Studies show that children under the age of 5 are most vulnerable to acute diarrhea and death from dehydration. Diarrhea and dehydration can be prevented by ensuring that enough salt and minerals are absorbed by the body. ORS contains various salts and minerals (electrolytes) and sugar. These salts replace the amount lost during dehydration and help the body hydrated.
